Basketball

Playing for Kelly

This is the journey of Chris Lavalle, a graduate walk-on from the Syracuse Men’s basketball team. A high school standout from West Genesee who’s mother, Kelly, was an administrative assistant for the Syracuse program. While he followed his collegiate basketball journey to St. John Fisher Chris and his family had more on their plate. Kelly, who originally had breast cancer when Chris was younger, had her cancer come back and spread, leading to her diagnosis with small cell lung cancer. When she passed away Chris was a year from his degree but he made a choice to transfer to Syracuse in order to honor his mother’s legacy.

“I don’t know if people will ever 50 years from now remember my story or not. I just want people to look back and say I did something real. I did something that is bigger than basketball. I did this for my mom. So, remember me not as a basketball player but for my story.” – Chris Lavalle, 2019-2022 Syracuse Guard
